Arsenal breaks Manchester City’s knot with a fatal victory
Arsenal won the match against Manchester City with an unanswered goal, in the match hosted by the Emirates Stadium this Sunday evening, in the eighth round of the English Premier League, to end a series of 12 consecutive defeats against City in the league.
Arsenal’s only goal was scored by Gabriel Martinelli in the 86th minute.
With that result, Arsenal raised its score to 20 points in second place, while Manchester City’s score froze at 18 points in third place.
City started the match strongly in the fifth minute, with Guardiola following up on a cross and shooting a header that Rice cleared from the goal line. The ball returned to City again and reached Haaland, who passed the ball to Ake to go one-on-one with Praya and shoot strangely over the crossbar.
City almost opened the scoring in the 17th minute, after Raya was late in clearing a ball and was pressured by Alvarez, so the Arsenal goalkeeper shot a ball that hit the Argentine striker’s foot and passed just past the post.
Arsenal’s first attempt came in the 26th minute, with a shot from Nketiah from inside the area, which went wide of the goal.
Arsenal players demanded that Kovacic be sent off in the 29th minute, after his violent intervention on Odegaard’s ankle, but the match referee was satisfied with the yellow card and the VAR referees supported his decision.
After a period of calm, City came back to try again with a shot from Alvarez from outside the area in the 34th minute, which also went wide of the goal. The following minutes did not witness anything new, and the first half ended in a goalless draw.
Arsenal started the second half with a shot from Odegaard from the edge of the area in the 50th minute, which went wide of the goal.
Substitute Martinelli followed with a powerful shot from the left side of the penalty area, which Ederson caught.
Arsenal tried again in the 63rd minute, with Zinchenko following a ball cleared by the City defense on the edge of the area, and shot a ball on the volley that went wide of the goal.
After a period of caution by both teams, Odegaard shot a ball from outside the area in the 75th minute, and it passed next to the post.
Arsenal snatched the victory in the 86th minute, with a shot from Martinelli from the edge of the area. It collided with Aki and changed its direction, deceiving Ederson and into the net, ending the match with the Gunners winning (1-0).
